Why I use books to create my work
책을 가지고 작품을 시작하게 된 계기
One day while I was thinking about what to draw, I noticed books in the bookshelf and they were all piled up neatly. These books gave me flashing ideas for my artwork. This idea of using books became the foundation for my creation.
어느 날 화실에 앉아 작품구상에 몸부림 치고 있었을 때 나의 시선을 사로잡았던 책들. 책꽂이에 꽂히고 남아 차곡차곡 쌓아 놓은 책 더미를 통해 번뜩 떠오르는 발상들은 나의 창작의 기반이 되었다.
To me, “Books are”
나에게 ‘책’이란…
They are main material for my work. 작품의 주재료이다.
”Books are paints to me” ‘책’은 나에게는 물감인 것이다.
“Books are part of nature”
책은 자연의 일부다!
Books came from nature. It is another one of nature’s phenomenons.
How exciting to express the nature’s images from using the materials in nature.
‘책’은 자연에서 왔으며 또 하나의 자연의 현상인 것이다.
자연에서 온 재료를 가지고 자연을 표현한다는 것은 얼마나 즐거운 일인가!
“Books are history!”
책은 역사다!
My work starts from gathering books.
stories of generations of people...
politics, issues, fashion..
essays, poems, novels, text books...
The books that were read by families.
Friends’ acquired books... etc...
내 작업은 책들을 모으는 일에서부터 작품이 시작된다.
시대를 살아가는 사람들의 이야기…
정치,이슈,유행…
수필, 시집, 소설, 교과서…
가족들이 읽은 책,
지인들이 읽고 소장한 책 등등

After gathering all the books, I put all of them together and paste them.
I slice one by one by hand and cut them in pieces, thin like Sashimi.
Because of this process, the books cannot be opened, be read or even be erased by the knife.
This is the process of old books becoming of a new book to tell a story.
These sliced pieces, with all their different colors, materials and feelings are mixed together like “JeonJu Bibimbop style” (A famous mixed rice with vegetables).
After the changing of a book’s contents and thus it’s meanings, there will be Sun and Moon, Tree and Mountain, Flowers and Birds, Houses and the City, etc...
The work is reincarnated by its various shapes of nature.
This means that an old book and now it’s new “book” have a coexistence on a canvas that creates a totally different story.
나는 모아온 책들을 펼칠 수 없게 옆면을 본드로 봉 한 후에
손으로 직접 칼질을 하고 토막내어 얇은 회를 떠낸다.
이러한 과정을 통해 책은 펼칠 수 없는 책, 읽을 수 없는 책으로 만드는 일이 되고
문자들을 모두 붙여 버리거나 칼에 의해 지워놓은 꼴이 된다.
이러한 책들은 원래의 책이 아닌 또 다른 이야기를 작품으로 만드는 과정인 것이다.
색상도 재질도 느낌도 내용(이야기)도 다른 책의 단면들을
전주식 비빔밥처럼 비벼서
하나의 책의 기능과 의미를 바꾼 세계를 만들어
자연의 해와 달, 나무와 산, 꽃과 새, 집과 도시 등
자연의 여러 형태로 환생을 시키는 작업이 된다.
옛 책과 지금의 책이 한 화면에 공존하고 여러 이야기들이
서로 뒤섞이고 서로 다른 문맥들을 가지고
자연에서 일어나는 온갖 현상들이 배어있는
또 하나의 이야기를 만드는 작업이 되는 것이다.
